Ligaments are strong, stretchy tissues that connect bones and also stabilize joints. Ligaments on the inside and outside of the ankle joint support the ankle and help stabilize it during up-and-down and side-to-side foot movements. An ankle sprain occurs when one or more of these ligaments become overly stretched or torn from a sudden movement, fall, or twist that knocks the ankle out of its normal position. Ankle sprains can occur while participating in sports, walking on uneven surfaces, or twisting your ankle wearing the wrong shoes. People who have had previous ankle sprains or weakened ankles due to genetics may be more prone to experiencing ankle sprains. Walking may prove challenging to a person with an ankle sprain, and they may experience pain, swelling, bruising, or joint stiffness. It is important to seek the care of a podiatrist for an ankle sprain in order to diagnose and treat any additional, more serious injury that may have occurred, as well as to facilitate proper and prompt healing and rehabilitation to avoid chronic ankle instability.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Dr. Robert Graser from Graser Podiatry and Bunion Surgery Institute. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

Why Are My Ankles Swollen?

Ankle swelling can be painful and a cause for concern. There are many reasons that your ankle may be swollen. An injury to the foot or ankle, such as a sprain, can cause swelling, as well as pain, tenderness, bruising, and difficulty walking or bearing weight on the affected leg. Infections can also cause swelling, and should be treated immediately to avoid serious complications. Venous insufficiency, a circulatory problem in which the veins don’t transport an adequate amount of blood from the legs back to the heart, may cause swelling and skin discoloration, and make infections and ulcers more likely. Other possible reasons that your ankles may be swollen include pregnancy, blood clots, systemic conditions such as liver and kidney disease, and taking certain medications. If you have swollen ankles and are unsure of the cause or are experiencing pain and discomfort, please seek the care of a podiatrist.

A blister appears as a bubble that develops on the skin. It is filled with fluid that protects the raw skin, and it is the body’s natural method of repairing skin that has become damaged. It often forms as a result of excess friction, and this can be caused by wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, or from excessive sunburn or frostbite. Additionally, there are certain medical conditions that can lead to the formation of blisters, consisting of psoriasis and eczema. It may be helpful to cover the blister with a protective bandage while completing daily activities. When new skin has formed, the blister will gradually drain, and disappear. If you have blisters on your feet, please consult with a podiatrist who can provide information about how to prevent them from becoming infected.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

What Can Cause Stress Fractures?

People who enjoy running may develop stress fractures. They are defined as hairline fractures that can occur in the bones in the feet, and can gradually develop from repetitive stress or overuse. The muscles resemble shock absorbers for the body, and can become fatigued while running. This can result in a stress fracture. Common symptoms patients may experience with this condition can include swelling, pain while running or performing weight bearing activities, and the area may feel tender. Mild relief may be found when the activity that caused the fracture is temporarily stopped, and the affected foot is elevated. If you feel you have developed a stress fracture in your foot, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist as quickly as possible so they can offer you the correct treatment options.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Dr. Robert Graser from Graser Podiatry and Bunion Surgery Institute. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.
